History
Named after New York Evening Post editor and abolitionist William Cullen Bryant, the park has a rich history dating back to 1686 when the area was designated as a public space. The park was a potter’s field (a burial place for the poor) from 1823 to 1840, and it was used for military drills during the American Civil War. It wasn’t until 1884 that it was officially named Bryant Park. The park underwent a major renovation in the 1980s due to crime and drug use, and reopened in 1992 with a new design and revitalized programming that made it a popular destination.
